Eva Air and Hello Kitty

I am not joking. Eva Air has teamed with Hello Kitty to create its second generation of Hello Kitty planes.

All started in 2005 when they decided to get the first two planes of the doll. And in 2011 they finished the last one, being a total of 5 in the fleet.

If you want to live the experience of flying in a fully Hello Kitty decorated plane: trays, stewardess, napkins, boarding pass... I think you got the idea, the only way to enjoy it is going to east Asia. At present, none of the aircrafts are flying internationally.

But I am sure for the really Hello Kitty fans, it is worth it.

Their website is only giving more information in chinese, but you can admire this marvellous pinky thing, they even have music! You can see all the routes in this map. Taipei-Seoul, Taipei-Tokyo, Taipei-Fukuoka, Taipei-Sapporo y Taipei-Hong Kong are all the available.

Richard Branson called the passenger

Richard Branson felt so amused by the letter one passenger sent, that contacted him personally:

I caught up with Richard Branson, and here is what he had to say about that letter:
"I rang him (the author of the letter) when I read it. It is one of the most amusing letters I had ever seen. I rang him at home at 9pm one evening.
"We had a good laugh about it. Then I contacted Virgin Atlantic and asked them to look into it. The Indians love the food, but the presentation has something to be desired. I'm sure they will be working to make the presentation better.
It [the complaint letter] was done in a humourous way."
Branson then went on to say that he regularly contacts customers who have complained. But some think it is a friend of theirs pretending to be Branson.
"I have had people put the phone down"

Probably because the passenger knew that Mr. Branson will get involved, he wrote the letter the way he did.

I love the Virgin brand, I really do which is why I continue to use it despite a series of unfortunate incidents over the last few years. This latest incident takes the biscuit.
Ironically, by the end of the flight I would have gladly paid over a thousand rupees for a single biscuit following the culinary journey of hell I was subjected to at thehands of your corporation.

Look at this Richard. Just look at it.
I imagine the same questions are racing through your brilliant mind as were racing through mine on that fateful day. What is this? Why have I been given it? What have I done to deserve this? And, which one is the starter, which one is the desert?
You don’t get to a position like yours Richard with anything less than a generous sprinkling of observational power so I KNOW you will have spotted the tomato next to the two yellow shafts of sponge on the left. Yes, it’s next to the sponge shaft without the green paste. That’s got to be the clue hasn’t it. No sane person would serve a desert with a tomato would they. Well answer me this Richard, what sort of animal would serve a desert with peas in: [see image 2, above].
I know it looks like a baaji but it’s in custard Richard, custard. It must be the pudding. Well you’ll be fascinated to hear that it wasn't custard. It was a sour gel with a clear oil on top. It’s only redeeming feature was that it managed to be so alien to my palette that it took away the taste of the curry emanating from our miscellaneous central cuboid of beige matter. Perhaps the meal on the left might be the desert after all.
Anyway, this is all irrelevant at the moment. I was raised strictly but neatly by my parents and if they knew I had started desert before the main course, a sponge shaft would be the least of my worries. So lets peel back the tin-foil on the main dish and see what’s on offer.
I’ll try and explain how this felt. Imagine being a twelve year old boy Richard. Now imagine it’s Christmas morning and you’re sat their with your final present to open. It’s a big one, and you know what it is. It’s that Goodmans stereo you picked out the catalogue and wrote to Santa about.
Only you open the present and it’s not in there. It’s your hamster Richard. It’s your hamster in the box and it’s not breathing. That’s how I felt when I peeled back the foil and saw this: [see image 3, above].
Now I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking it’s more of that Baaji custard. I admit I thought the same too, but no. It’s mustard Richard. MUSTARD. More mustard than any man could consume in a month. On the left we have a piece of broccoli and some peppers in a brown glue-like oil and on the right the chef had prepared some mashed potato. The potato masher had obviously broken and so it was decided the next best thing would be to pass the potatoes through the digestive tract of a bird.
Once it was regurgitated it was clearly then blended and mixed with a bit of mustard. Everybody likes a bit of mustard Richard.
By now I was actually starting to feel a little hypoglycaemic. I needed a sugar hit. Luckily there was a small cookie provided. It had caught my eye earlier due to it’s baffling presentation: [see image 4, above].
It appears to be in an evidence bag from the scene of a crime. A CRIME AGAINST BLOODY COOKING. Either that or some sort of back-street underground cookie, purchased off a gun-toting maniac high on his own supply of yeast. You certainly wouldn’t want to be caught carrying one of these through customs. Imagine biting into a piece of brass Richard. That would be softer on the teeth than the specimen above.
I was exhausted. All I wanted to do was relax but obviously I had to sit with that mess in front of me for half an hour. I swear the sponge shafts moved at one point.
Once cleared, I decided to relax with a bit of your world-famous onboard entertainment. I switched it on: [see image 5, above].
I apologise for the quality of the photo, it’s just it was incredibly hard to capture Boris Johnson’s face through the flickering white lines running up and down the screen. Perhaps it would be better on another channel: [see image 6, above].
Is that Ray Liotta? A question I found myself asking over and over again throughout the gruelling half-hour I attempted to watch the film like this. After that I switched off. I’d had enough. I was the hungriest I’d been in my adult life and I had a splitting headache from squinting at a crackling screen.
My only option was to simply stare at the seat in front and wait for either food, or sleep. Neither came for an incredibly long time. But when it did it surpassed my wildest expectations: [see image 7, above].
Yes! It’s another crime-scene cookie. Only this time you dunk it in the white stuff.
Richard…. What is that white stuff? It looked like it was going to be yoghurt. It finally dawned on me what it was after staring at it. It was a mixture between the Baaji custard and the Mustard sauce. It reminded me of my first week at university. I had overheard that you could make a drink by mixing vodka and refreshers. I lied to my new friends and told them I’d done it loads of times. When I attempted to make the drink in a big bowl it formed a cheese Richard, a cheese. That cheese looked a lot like your baaji-mustard.
So that was that Richard. I didn’t eat a bloody thing. My only question is: How can you live like this? I can’t imagine what dinner round your house is like, it must be like something out of a nature documentary.
As I said at the start I love your brand, I really do. It’s just a shame such a simple thing could bring it crashing to it’s knees and begging for sustenance.

  • Paul Charles, Virgin’s Director of Corporate Communications, confirmed that Sir Richard Branson had telephoned the author of the letter and had thanked him for his “constructive if tongue-in-cheek” email. Mr Charles said that Virgin was sorry the passenger had not liked the in-flight meals which he said was “award-winning food which is very popular on our Indian routes.”

British Airways advice to the passengers for 30 Nov 2011

The following checklist has been created to provide customers travelling tomorrow (30 November) with advice.


UK Border Agency (UKBA) staff will be involved in the public sector strike on Wednesday 30 November 2011, which may create long delays at passport control for customers arriving at Heathrow, Gatwick or London City airports.

British Airways is planning to operate a normal schedule but will be monitoring the situation closely.

Advice and information for customers due to travel on November 30, 2011:

   Customers should take any medication in hand luggage. Carry a
      prescription or letter from a doctor for any medication being
      carried. For details on the carriage of medicines, please check

   Customers on departing flights from London Heathrow, London Gatwick or
      London City are asked to arrive at the airport no earlier than two
      hours prior to their flight.

   Customers travelling with children will, as always, be able to keep any
      buggies/pushchairs until they reach the aircraft side, at which point
      it will be put in the hold and delivered back to customers upon

   For those people who are due to meet someone at the airport, keep
      checking live arrivals and departures information on and stay
      in touch with the person you are collecting.

   All customers arriving into London’s Heathrow, Gatwick or City airports
      on a British Airways international flight on 30 November, 2011 have
      the option to move their flight to 29 November or 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
      or 7 December, 2011. This includes customers who arrive on
      international flights and are due to connect on to domestic UK

American Airlines files for bankrupcty

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- American Airlines' parent company, AMR Corp., announced Tuesday that it has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The decision comes as the airline tries to "achieve a cost and debt structure that is industry competitive and thereby assure its long-term viability and ability to continue delivering a world-class travel experience for its customers," the company said in a statement Tuesday.
AMR (AMRFortune 500) said American Airlines, American Eagle and all other subsidiaries will honor all tickets and reservations and operate normal flight schedules during the bankruptcy filing process, using its $4.1 billion in cash.  To top of page

UK 30 Nov 2011 strike

If you are travelling this Wednesday, be aware of the public sector strike that can affect you with delays and long queues. BA border force staff will go on strike meaning airports will be severely affected with disruptions. Flights are operating normally, but if you are travelling to/from an international destination you may experience long queues at the border.
Most airlines are allowing passengers to change tickets if you are travelling on this date, but not all. Please contact your airline or travel agency for further information.
Refunds are not permitted with most airlines.

Passengers may, without fee:
  • Rebook to alternative Qantas/British Airways flights between 27 November 2011 and 07 December 2011(including QF Codeshare flights operated by BA).
  • Re-route travel
    Via the most direct routing using Qantas.
    Return to the origin port via the most direct routing using Qantas.  

o    All changes must be made prior to, or on day of departure
o    Alternative dates to rebook inbound travel are restricted to 27/28/29 November 2011 or 01/02/03/04/05/06/07 December 2011.
o    Alternative flights must be booked as per the original booking class (eg O/Q/S/L/M in applicable cabin). Should the original booking class not be available, re-book in the lowest booking class within the same travel cabin.
o    New travel dates must be within ticket validity.
o    Qantas will not be responsible for paying any other costs or expenses such as hotel or other ground operator fees arising due to events beyond our control, unless required by applicable laws.
o    All other rules and conditions of the ticket remain unchanged.
o    Refunds are not permitted unless allowed under ticketed fare rules.
o    This policy also applies to customers who are booked on Codeshare flights operated by Qantas.

Air New Zealand: 
  • Passengers ticketed to travel on NZ2 29Nov from AKL or LAX to LHR may change their date of travel (i.e. bring forward or defer) to another date prior to and including Monday the 5th December.

Aer Lingus: no changes free of charge as flights are operating. If passenger wants to change, need to pay fee plus upgrading.

American Airlines: Customers ticketed to arrive on an international American Airlines, British Airways or Iberia flight into London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London City or Manchester on November 30, 2011 where tickets were issued no later than November 25, 2011 may amend their flights to travel between November 28, 2011 and December 7, 2011.

Swiss: One Rebooking permitted free of charge on the following dates: 27, 28, 29 NOV and 1,2,3,4 DEC 2011 (fare & validity restrictions can be ignored) if seats are available in the respective compartment. Providing some conditions and for tickets issued before 25th Nov.

Air France and KLM: rebooking permitted in the same cabin to any date before 7 Dec.

United Airlines and Continental: are waiving change fees and add collect for customers arriving or connecting in the U.K. on November 30, when re-booked prior to December 7, 2011.

Emirates: their tickets rebooked/re-issued for travel on the following dates at no additional cost provided the original class is available for the new date:28 or 29 Nov 11, 01 / 02 / 03 / 04 / 05 / 06 or 07 Dec 11.

Qatar: This policy applies to passengers holding a confirmed reservation and a confirmed ticket issued on/or prior to 30th November 2011 for travel on one of the affected flights on 30th November 2011 only.

1. Rebook to an alternative QR service between DOH and LHR or MAN (and any QR connecting flight which is part of the original ticket) without penalty under the following conditions: The new dates of travel must be between 26th November and 3rd December 2011 inclusive. Rebooking should be made in the original ticketed class. Where this is not available, rebooking should be made in the lowest available class in the same cabin.
Jet Airways:Guests arriving London (LHR) 30th November, 2011 may change their bookings to earlier flight dates (27th, 28th, 29th November, 2011) or rebook to later flight dates (1st to 7th December, 2011) on the lowest available RBDs, free of charge.

Ryanair extends reserved seating to all routes

Following what promised some time ago, Ryanair is extending the reserved seating option in all their routes. There will not many airlines now not asking us to pay for the seats when booking our flight. Specially the low cost carries, if I am not wrong, only Easyjet is not charging for it, but they are planning to do it.

News on Business Traveller:
Budget carrier Ryanair will allow customers on all routes to purchase reserved seating from January 10 following a successful six-month trial (see online news November 7). The pre-booking service will be charged at €10 each way and will include priority boarding.
The optional service will allow passengers to secure favourable seats in the front two rows for a swift exit, or over the wings in rows 16 and 17, which offer extra legroom (to see a seat plan click here).  
This move comes as an allocated seating policy is proving increasingly popular with low cost carriers looking to boost ancillary revenues. Easyjet recently launched an allocated seating trial (see online news November 15), and Bmibaby launched a FlyPlus fare which includes seat assignment (see online news September 7).

Mango is not a fruit... or a clothing shop

Mango is also a South African low cost operating 6 routes across the country with 5 aircrafts. There is no reason not to trust it as it belongs to South African Airways, the government´s airline.

But they are not the only low cost in the country as also have wider choices with Kulula and 1Time.

Low cost are a great option in this country were distances are so huge.

Plane lands without wheels

Warsaw airport remained closed today due to an emergency landing. This plane from the airline LOT landed without wheels after one hour going in circles above Warsaw dumping excess fuel.


Luckily, none of the 250 people on board suffered any injury. The landing seems pretty normal, apart from some smoke. Maybe some of the pilots having working previously in the army has to do with the safe landing!
